Celebrating the International Day of the Girl - October 2018
60 girls from five Brisbane high schools (years 10 and 11) came together at QPAC on Friday 13 October for a day of special WOW-like activities to celebrate the International Day of the Girl and to brainstorm ideas for the 2019 International Women’s Day events at their individual schools.
Several inspirational women were on hand to share their life experiences, engage serious conversations, spark ideas and provide different perspectives on the 2018 theme With Her: A Skilled GirlForce. They included Lizzie Lorley from 4AAA, Aria-nominated First Nation musician Emily Wurramurra, Maddy Buchner the CEO of Little Dreamers (a $1m not for profit organisation caring for young carers), the award-winning and self-published slam poet Anisa Nanduala, Zillah Douglas, the coordinator of Loloma Foundation’s mobile international women’s health clinics in the Solomon Islands and Fiji and a guest appearance from Queensland Deputy Premier Jackie Trad MP.
The day was topped off with a WOW speedmentoring session where each girl met with four different professional women from all walks of life while enjoying the views of the City from the pods on The Wheel of Brisbane!
An inspirational, motivating day full of discussion, debate and different thinking - definitely a school day unlike any other!
Thanks to Queensland Government, Griffith University, QPAC and The Wheel of Brisbane for their support for this event.
We hope to repeat this event in 2019 so if you think your school could be interested contact firstname.lastname@example.org
