WOW Australia acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the sovereign First Nations of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, including those traditional owners of the land on which our event will be taking place, the Jagera and Turrbal peoples of Meanjin known as Brisbane.

In welcoming women and girls from First Nations across Australia and the world, WOW Australia 2020 will extend understanding of the unique place and contributions of First Nation women and girls to contemporary life, and to create a celebration which honours differences and builds connections through shared experiences.

Through conversations, performances, panels, exhibitions, short talks and more, the festival will feature a HUGE array of local and international speakers, First Nation leaders and change-makers tackling the big issues for women everywhere. Individual day and 3-day passes are now on sale.

MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND

The Women of the World (WOW) Festival was born out of a vision to raise the profile of issues affecting women and girls, to remove the obstacles to success and to imagine a world in which gender equality has been fully realised. Since the first festival was staged in London in 2010, WOW has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with festivals held in 30 countries across five continents.

Queensland’s 2018 WOW Festival coincided with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games – the largest event ever staged in our State – and brought together speakers, activists and performers from Australia and 23 other Commonwealth nations. Attended by more than 5000 people, women from different cultural and religious backgrounds shared their stories, exchanged ideas and found common ground during the three-day festival. It was an enriching experience and I am delighted to welcome WOW back to Queensland, with funding secured for three annual festivals from 2020.

My Government shares WOW Australia’s commitment to the advancement of women and girls, with the festival’s objectives aligning with the Queensland Women’s Strategy 2016–21 – our comprehensive framework to achieve gender equality in Queensland. We have made significant progress in tackling disadvantage and promoting female leadership in our State, and WOW promises to empower people of all ages to drive positive and lasting change.

I look forward to Queensland once again hosting the engaging conversation, lively debate and joyous energy of this inspiring global festival.
