Maddie McCosker

Rural Reporter, ABC News

Maddie was born in a small rural town in the Western Downs region of QLD, and has lived in small rural or remote communities all her life. After going to boarding school at Yeppoon, she went to Brisbane for university where she started study’s dual degree of Criminology and Criminal Justice/Psychology.

After getting half way through that degree she realised that while she loved learning about criminology, it was not a career path she wanted to pursue. From there, Maddie moved to a Journalism degree, and she says from the moment she made the decision “it just felt the the right move.”

While studying she took part in work experience at a Central Queensland newspaper, where she would return to work as a cadet journalist and digital producer. She also did two internships with ABC in Brisbane and in Longreach, which lead to casual work in the Brisbane office until she graduated in 2017.

After some more casual work with ABC in the Rockhampton office, and an 18 month stint as a newspaper journalist, Maddie started her dream job as a Rural Reporter for the ABC in Longreach in 2019. She is passionate about telling peoples stories, bridging the gap between city and country, and learning more about rural life through the wonderful people she meets.
