Kate Ruttiman

General Secretary of the Queensland Teachers’ Union

Originally a secondary economics and English teacher, Kate Ruttiman has been the General Secretary of the Queensland Teachers’ Union since the beginning of 2021. A Union pioneer, Kate is the first woman to hold the General Secretary role, and in 2010 was also the first woman to join the QTU secretariat, when she was elected Deputy General Secretary. In this role, Kate was the QTU’s lead enterprise bargaining negotiator and worked on the performance review models, joint statements and basic guides. She is a Trustee and member of the Australian Retirement Trust Board and is also the Honorary President of the Queensland Council of Unions.
